Cecil Johnson - Oklahoma Fiddler

One of the lesser known fiddlers of yesterday, Cecil Johnson.  No doubt compared to his brother, Herman, who was a well known, highly respected, and talented fiddler.  I have looked for more information about Cecil and sadly, all I've found are short mentions of him with comparisons to his brother saying that Cecil was "a good fiddler in his own right."  That's unfair at best.

I received this LP just a few weeks ago and fell in love with it right away.  Cecil wasn't silky smooth nor overly fanciful.  He was however a powerful old-time fiddler deserving of his own attention and adoration who had his own twist on these standard contest pieces.

I'm not a sound engineer by any stretch but I tried to clean these tracks up the best I could.  The previous owner obviously polished this LP with 80-grit sandpaper after they were done playing with it in their sandbox.  There's several artifacts, pops, peaks, and quite a bit of "character".

I did however redo the album cover for the download as the original is ragged, stained, and beat up.

You can download Cecil's 14 track album in its entirety by clicking below!

I'm not going to shill too much for support but I'll attach a button to buy me a coffee below, but only if you're able.
Any other donations will go towards the archival, sharing, equipment, etc.

(Ko-fi actually lets the creators KEEP all of their donations without taking a cut.)

  3. WooooWHEEE! Finally got the chance to sit down and do some reading and listening here. What a great find, John! This is such a treasure, and your write-up in spot on. (80-grit sandpaper -- heeehee!)
